The Struggle Within

Scripture

Romans 7:18-19 (NIV) For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.

Observation

Paul gets real in this passage, talking about a struggle that we all know too well: wanting to do good but finding ourselves doing the opposite. It's comforting to hear someone like Paul admit he faces this same inner battle. This reminds us that we're not alone in our struggles and highlights how much we need God’s help.

Here are a few takeaways from this passage:

  1. Acknowledging Our Struggle. Paul points out that no matter how much we want to do good, our sinful nature trips us up. It’s important to recognize this so we can understand our need for God’s intervention. Admitting our weakness is the first step to finding God’s strength.

  2. We’re All in This Together. Knowing that Paul faced these struggles too can be a relief. It shows us that struggling with sin is a common experience among believers. Even spiritual giants face the same battles we do.

  3. Leaning on God's Grace. Our inability to consistently do good on our own shows how much we need God’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s power. We can’t do it alone, and thankfully, we don’t have to. God’s grace fills the gaps where we fall short.

Application

  1. Be Honest with Yourself. Admit your struggles with sin. It’s okay to acknowledge your weaknesses and your need for God’s grace. Honesty with ourselves leads to honesty with God.

  2. Rely on God's Strength. Instead of relying on your own willpower, ask God for help. Lean on the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength to do what’s right. God’s strength is perfected in our weakness.

  3. Embrace Grace. Remember, it’s okay to mess up. What’s important is accepting God’s grace and letting it inspire you to keep striving to live a holy life. Grace is the safety net that catches us when we fall.

Paul’s words in Romans 7:18-19 remind us that everyone struggles with sin. By being honest, relying on God’s strength, and embracing His grace, we can live a victorious life despite our imperfections.

Prayer
